We may think that really big things will make us happy, such as a great new job, winning the lottery or a fantastic trip around the world. But perhaps real happiness lies in the mini steps; the 'ordinary' moments, the everyday...
In this issue there is a lot of attention for small happiness. The universe showers you with hundreds of little gifts every day. The water that slowly warms in the shower, the smile of a loved one or a ray of sunshine breaking through the clouds on a gray day. To really enjoy this you have to open yourself up to it, and you can practice that.
For example, did you know that a seemingly insignificant task like cleaning is considered a spiritual practice in Zen Buddhism? On page 82 we invite you to give it a try. Put the thought of 'the house needs to be done' out of your mind and instead focus on the cup in front of you, the piece of floor or that one piece of clothing - even if the rest of the house is still a mess. In this way you give yourself an important signal: there is room for the little things in life.
Of course, enjoying small happiness does not have to go well all at once. Just look at Japanese Kaizen: change by taking small steps. With Kaizen you look for small happiness by examining your habits and fine-tuning them here and there. Not too big, not too drastic, just a little bit.
Gradual change leads to sustainable change. And through those small steps you become aware of the magic of life, that which we cannot see when we rush by with our big wishes, goals and desires.
