Ode to the farmer

The number of farms in the Netherlands is decreasing rapidly. Increasing regulations, the lack of a successor and sometimes very limited incomes make the future uncertain for many farmers. Thirty percent are expected to quit in the next ten years.
This threatens to destroy a unique way of life. A way in which work and private life cannot be seen separately. Where long and hard work sometimes does not yield a cent, but where the love for the land and the animals is greater than the desire for a well-filled bank account.
They only retire on paper. In reality, they farm as long as they can. Their farm is more than just work. It is their whole being.
Photographer Lode Greven and writer Margreet Welink visited farmers for the magazine Landleven for years. They experienced farm life up close and recorded it in words and images. Their heart-warming stories and beautiful color photos take the reader into the world of a special professional group. It became an ode to the farmer.
